POLICIES

Note: Information about Pointe and Semi-private non-performance classes can be found at the bottom of this page.

1. DOUBLE-BOOKING:
Please do not double-book yourself on dance class days. If you enter a conflict with your class time due to sports, drama, etc. talk with your teacher to work out a solution. We will not allow you to consistently arrive late or leave class early due to those conflicts. We might be able to switch you to another class temporarily or permanently, but this must be discussed as soon as you are aware of the conflict. You can always go to your coach or theatre director as well and explain that you have a prior commitment. They might let you leave the practice or rehearsal early just one day per week if that is the only conflict.

2. MISSING CLASSES:
Call the studio if you are going to miss class due to illness. If you know about a one-time (not on-going) school event that conflicts with your class, please tell the teacher the week before or call in the absence. The number is (978) 468-2393.

3. INCLEMENT WEATHER:
Dance classes will automatically be cancelled if Hamilton-Wenham public schools are closed. If Satruday classes need to be cancelled you will get a phone call either the night before or in the morning before your class time. If there is a one or two hour delay for the public schools, dance classes will be held after that time has passed. Any classes within the delay time will be cancelled. There will be a message on the phone machine at the studio regarding any cancellations. Monday through Friday students will only get a call if a storm begins after the school day is underway and we need to cancel afternoon and evening classes. You will not receive a phone call if the public schools have been cancelled for the day.  Call (978) 468-2393 for updates.

4. MISSED CLASSES: Missed classes can be made up any time during the semester in a class equal to or lesser than the level in which you are enrolled. This applies to cancellations due to inclement weather as well. You can also try a beginner level in another style if it is not recital preparation time. The 4 weeks of classes after the recital is an ideal time to take make ups and try a new style.

5. INJURIES and ILLNESS:
If you have a physical limitation or know you will be missing class due to illness or injury, please email the director at katybrunault@live.com and she will tell the teacher. If you have an injury or illness that keeps you out of class for more than 2 weeks, you must have a doctor's note explaining the injury/illness and stating that you are cleared for full participation in dance class. You must give the note to your teacher before returning to class.

6. REFUNDS:
No refunds are given except in the case of long-term injury or illness or it a student withdraws from a class after 4 weeks from the start of a semester.

7. CLASS SIZE:
Hamilton-Wenham School of Dance reserves the right to dissolve a class it if does not reach its enrollment quota. Refunds will be given in the event that a class is cancelled for that reason.

8. RECITAL CRITERIA:
In order to participate in the recital you must make it a priority to attend your classes. Class time is also rehearsal time from February until the recital in May. You can have up to 4 absences and still be in the recital but it is advised not to use those absences unless you have to for sick days or mandatory school events. The whole group needs to rehearse together for everyone to feel confident about the recital piece and for safety on the stage.

POINTE

SEMI-PRIVATE CLASSES

The study of pointe is a serious matter and a student must qualify physically and emotionally to be accepted into the pointe program. Once a student has completed at least Ballet IV and is at least 12 years old, she is entitled to have an evaluation in June to be approved to enter the pointe program the following September. If she is not accepted, she will be told what she needs to work on to apply again. If there is a structural issue, it will be identified at the time of the evaluation and it might be unsafe for her to pursue pointe. The evaluations are done by the two ballet teachers on staff and a physical therapist who specializes in dance. They are held on a Saturday in June. More information will be given to each student who is ready to be evaluated.

The pointe program begins with the P.A.S.S. class, a class that covers Placement, Alignment, Stretch and Strengthening. They continue to progress in the pointe program and eventually are strong enough to perform on pointe in the recital in either their third or fourth year of pointe.

We offer semi-private ballet and jazz classes for older students who need to catch up and learn a dance style before being admitted to a regular class. We find that older students learn quite quickly especially if there are only 2-4 students in the class. Training is geared to each individual, and when a student is ready to be transitioned into a regular class we find the right one for them.

The semi-private classes are non-performance classes so there is no recital piece attached to them. Consistent training is best. However, if a student has to leave the program for a few weeks due to a conflict, they are able to come back to the class and pick up where they left off unlike our regular class policy. Depending on the size of the class, the rates vary from $15 per class to $25 per class.

At this time Semi-private Jazz is offered on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:15 and Semi-private Ballet is offered on Thursdays from 6:30-7:30. Both classes are held in the small studio next to the big studio at the main facility upstairs at the Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing.
